Sportive report shows over 120 bike brands used by participants

Sports Marketing Surveys have produced a Sportive Report for a second successive year giving insight into the equipment, expenditure, considerations, lifestyle and media consumption of CycloSportive participants across key events* in the UK during the 2013 season.

122 different bike brands were used by sportive participants, but 34% of the sample used one of three leading brands. The top 10 bike models on show came from seven different brands, and the number one bike model bore a Specialized badge.

Interestingly, the number of bike brands used increased significantly from 87 in 2012, while there was little fluctuation in percentage of competitors who used one of the three leading brands - 33% chose Specialized, Bianchi or Giant in 2012.

The 2013 research concluded that both Specialized and Giant maintained their status as one of the top three brands, while Trek replaced Bianchi on the podium.

79 different wheel brands were tallied, with the top 4 brands producing the 10 most popular models. Similar information was also registered for the groupset, helmet, shoes, eyewear and apparel categories.

Commenting on the data John Bushell, MD of SMS INC., said:

"Our work at CycloSportive events over the past couple of years has offered our clients significant, previously unavailable insight into a key sector of consumers. We believe the completion and availability of this new research could prove invaluable for road bike brands particularly, as the CycloSportive participant is of great importance to their business".

"Being the second year that we have conducted this research - with the addition of the extensive European events - is particularly significant as it enables brands to analyse fluctuations in their market share for the first time, as the sport grows so rapidly".

Following the success and popularity of the 2012 and 2013 research programmes, the company's plans for Sportive equipment evaluation are being finalised for 2014, with the planned addition of two major events in Germany.

This year will also see the opportunity for many participants to complete a post event survey to help the Event Organiser, but also to help understand the lifestyle and behaviour habits of the cyclist with reference to leisure & recreational cycling and commuting, as well as competitive sportive involvement.
