European Sportive report shows over 195 bike brands used by participants

Back in April we reported on research carried out by Sports Marketing Surveys which showed that an impressive 120 bike brands we used by CycloSportive participants in the UK.

Research carried out across a number European CycloSportive events in 2013 showed a staggering 195 bike brands were used across the continental European events sampled*

- a significantly larger number than that tallied at UK cyclo-sportives in 2013. However, there was commonality among the top brands with Specialized, Trek, Cannondale, Scott and Giant featuring as the preferred choice among European competitors.

John Bushell, MD of SMS INC., said: "Our work at European cyclo-sportive events throughout 2013 offers insight into the key purchasing decisions of participants.

SMS INC. has also announced that the top-three shoe brands accounted for 57% of the continental Europe sample, with Sidi leading the way, followed by Shimano and Specialized. The top three brands accounted for 64% of the UK sample.

For apparel worn whilst competing, the club jersey was by far and away the most popular garment worn in the continental Euro events, where 33% of the sample chose to showcase their club allegiances. This is in stark contrast to the 2013 UK cyclo-sportives, where less than 15% chose to sport a club jersey.

SMS INC.'s research has also unveiled some interesting trends in purchasing behaviour on the continent. On average, participants in the continental based European events spent more than €500 more on their bike than UK riders - at an average price of over €2,700 compared to only €2,200 in the UK.
