SealSkinz Technical Mountain Bike Gloves £40

Tested by Matt Swaine

Winter morning rides can deliver anything from astoundingly crisp sunrises over frosty fields howling winds and spiteful rain that see you crawling at a snails pace. Either way, they leave you with a tale to tell: because anyone can cycle in summer but it takes dedication and real passion for your bike to keep up the miles over winter.

It's all too easy to make excuses when it's freezing cold outside so it's well worth investing in a bit of dedicated winter kit to inspire you to get out on the bike. These gloves are made for the coldest of days: packed with Primaloft insulation to keep you toasty, they feature gel padded palms and reflective trims and are waterproof, windproof and breathable.

In fact, they are so warm and so toasty that I've struggled to use them until recently when the first snow falls have started to hit our roads. Because in even mildly cold weather your hands soon start to boil: which means I can definitely give the thumbs up to their breathability claims: although my hands were sweating in these they remained remarkably dry.

When the first icy morning hit, though these gloves were simply perfection. I have another pair of lighter windproof Sealskinz gloves which are equally capable of coping with full winter conditions, because I tend to have warm hands. But anyone who suffers with the cold would definitely benefit from these.

But due to their additional bulk I did have a few problems with circulation to my hands. After about 45 mins in the saddle I started to get pins and needles in my fingers, which makes me think that you need to think very carefully about fitting these gloves to make sure they aren't at all tight.

But they are defintely tough. My bike decided to spin out of control on a section of black ice, only last week and I was sent skidding across the road on the palms of these gloves. When i stood up there was not a hint of damage. Pretty impressive stuff.
