Shutt Velo Rapide Womens Isobel Jersey £79

Tested by Tracey Radnall, tester for The Bike List

Designed by their own in-house designer, initial impressions suggest a lot of thought has gone into the development of this Shutt Velo Rapide jersey. Firstly, the fabric is very soft to the touch and stretchy, too, thanks to the addition of Spandex in the material. The result is a very comfortable and flattering fit, and the medium size I tested fitted as I'd have expected. The jersey has a scooped tail with a generous gel gripper along the base ensuring your lower back stays covered. There are ventilation mesh panels under the arm pits and the short sleeves offer a comfortably snug fit, too; nothing is too tight. The rear features three generous pockets, offering plenty of room for your shades and snacks. The centre pocket is zipped with a ring pull and ideal for securing your phone or keys. Best of all the jersey features a full-length zip, meaning it's very easy to introduce further ventilation if you're tackling a lengthy climb, or on a hard summer training ride. Visibility on the road is important and Shutt have given this their attention, too. The rear and front zips are made of a silver reflective material, while the rear pockets and hem are also piped in a silver reflective material, as is the logo on the chest and shoulder. A little extra visibility goes a long way.

I wore this jersey on several rides into the Lammermuir hills from my home in the Scottish Borders. This is rolling country; this, coupled with the warm late summer sunshine provided the ideal conditions and climate to test its performance. The stretchy fabric performed flawlessly and is very comfortable when working hard uphill. The full-length zip was particularly useful on these occasions, tool. It's a personal thing, but I really like Shutt's colour choices, too - for a start, it's really refreshing to see a lack of pink in a women-specific cycling jersey. The jersey I tested was in a stylish dusky purple with multi-colour polka dot panel design front and back. Another refreshing change is that Shutt's sizing isn't reserved purely for the lean racing snakes of the world, with this jersey coming in a range of no less than seven sizes, from SS to XXL (8-18).

If you ride all year, especially if you're still out on chillier late-summer evenings, there are warmer jerseys on the market. Rapha, for instance, make a lightweight jersey with a merino wool element to the fabric, which will keep you warmer. But at £110, it's a fair bit more expensive, too.

At a glance

Verdict Ticks all the boxes for a summer ride. Great features and detailing, comfortable and flattering, with a stylish design. Good value for money, too.
